North Korean soldier : Surgeon says defector was like a broken jar

South Korean surgeon Lee Cook-Jong was already busy when he got a phone call saying

a US Black Hawk (helicopter) was on its way carrying an solder severely injured

Professor Lee Cook-Jong said "I was informed that he was badly shot by North Korean soldiers

The events that brought North Korean defector Oh, to his trauma unit hit Korean media all day.

The surgeon who has treated the defector badly shot by his comrades has been well known for the famous and the most beloved doctor in Korea due to his devotion and sacrifice for patients

Lee says he went to see his critically injured patient on the helipad (a place where helicopters touch down), just a few hundred feet from the state-of-the-art, US-modeled trauma center(외상센터) he has been running at Ajou University Hospital in Suwon

The chopper(helicoter) was coming in fas, and for that the surgeon appreciated

His medical symtoms were

"His vital sings were so unstable,

he was dying of low blood pressure,

he was dying of shock"

"He was like a broken jar.

We couldn't put enough blood into him"

He might die with the surgeon Lee's emergent medical treatment with cooperation from everywhere

The defector was 24 years old

who had been shot around five times

by his fellow North Korean soldiers

as he escaped across the line

that divides North and South Korea

Riddled with bullets, (riddled with bullets or bullet holes, it's full of bullet holes / riddled combines with nouns to form adjectives that describe something as being full of a particular undesriable thing or quality / ex) She pushed the bullet-riddled door open / His body was riddled with cancer / Lebanon's south is also riddled with land mines(지뢰)

he was taken to safety

by South Korean soldiers

and went close to death

during the 25-minute airlift(공수작전: 안전지대로 옮기는 작전)

to hospital

What unfolded

afther the Black Hawk(helicopter which took the defector to the hospital) touched down

was a harrowing effort

to keep Oh alive

that lasted more than six hours

In the first 30 minutse,

after Oh was rushed into Trauma Room One

the Surgeon and his staff worked

to keep the defector greathing

He has one bullet through his right knee joint

the other one is the tricep muscle [삼두근] area on his arm

the third one was his back: chest

and coming out from his shoulder

But the worst was yet to come

yet to come : 아직 오지 않았다

There will be even more changes and innovations yet to come

Tomorrow is yet to come

The greater abomination [난관] is yet to come

Real war is yet to come

During a five-hour operation to get rid of a bullet that went through Oh's intestines,

Lee saw parasites he's never seen in his 20-year-career as a doctor

Lee Cook-Jong explained

working to repair at least seven wounds

in Oh's perforated[구멍난] bowel [창자, 장]

as the white worms were squirming [꿈틀대다: moving from side to side because you are nervous or uncomfortable ]their way out of Oh's body

동사 +one's way out of something

ex)

She married her way out of poverty

He talked his way out of the problem

He found his way out of the difficulty

It squirmmed its way out of his body

Everything was stained[얼룩투성이 with blood

but the parasite[기생충] was basiccally a really white color

and this thick, big long and very hard

this kind of thing was getting out from his bowel system

Lee Kook-Jong said it's a miracle that he survivied

as the defector's vital signs were so unstable

Fortunately he removed all parasites from Oh's organ, some of them were as long as 27 cemtimeters (more than 10 inches)

How would he have so many parasites in his vowel system?

intestinal worms are typically transmitted[전염되다]

through contact with feces [배설물] or unwashed hands [씻지 않은 손]

or

The use of human fertilize on crops

poor sanitary condition

Lee said with affection toward his patient

"I'm proud of Oh fleeing from North Korea to seek for liberty,

It's easy to say, but it's really difficult to make it happen.

That's why I admire him

The defector showed a fast-paced recovery

tht has surprised even his doctors

after being operated on

Now how is he doing?

Oh is walking, talking and going to the bathroom alone

His condition is much more stable than before

but still severe

Oh is under psychiatric care

and likely to be struggling with post traumatic stress disorder

He has been having nightmares, fearing he's still in North Korea

The North Korean defector asked Lee

is it really South Korea?

It's unclear what hte future holds

He said he's interested in studying law unlike other defectors who have gone into the South Korean military

Oh likes K-pop music

There's been intense interest in Oh's story

across the country

and even by international media
